More about the artist

Through her gorgeous songs, award-winning singer and composer Nani Noam Vazana charts a celebrated course, leading the effort to preserve Ladino, the endangered language of the Sephardic Jews. After a sold-out performance in Morocco, Nani wandered the old quarter of her ancestral hometown of Fez, and recognized a tune her grandmother used to sing when they were cooking together. This led Nani to compose the world’s 1st album of NEW Ladino songs.

Her fourth album Ke Haber (‘What’s New’ in Ladino) is “an unprecedented album of new songs that sound familiar” (Songlines). It captures the spirit of the ancient, matriarchal language and culture and propels it into the 21st century with socially pertinent lyrics, celebrating migration, gender and female empowerment. Nani unveils a piece of history we don’t easily find in other mythology & anthropology.

The soundscape bridges over tradition and modern life, capturing the sounds and smells of the marketplace and fuses them with raw, flamenco like vocals and surprising instrumentations. Soft choral-like trombones embellish mariachi guitars and sweeping Arabic percussion meets heart bearking piano melodies - together making this record a magical realistic mosaic.

Nani charted #11 on Most Played World Albums chart as well as #13 on World Music Charts Europe and #19 on iTunes Bestseller. She represented the Netherlands at the EU Music Festival in Vietnam and performed at the Kennedy Center USA and BBC Radio 3. Nani was awarded with the SENA Music Production Award NL, the International Sephardic Music Award ES and the Arts Council England Premiere Award.
