More about the artist

Widely acclaimed by the Swedish jazz press, Daniel Karlsson is regarded as one of the country’s foremost jazz pianists and bandleaders. As both a composer and performer, he has been praised and awarded with several of the jazz world’s most prestigious honors. Together with bassist Christian Spering and drummer Fredrik Rundqvist, the Daniel Karlsson Trio has received awards including a Swedish Grammy, Gyllene Skivan (The Golden Record), SR’s Jazzkatten, and Jazzkannan.

Karlsson’s compositions are known for their distinct and outgoing character. The trio’s music moves skillfully between 1960s jazz, soul, and pop, all the while rooted in a distinctly Nordic tone—melancholic, melodic, and imaginative.

Their live performances are often described as musical journeys. With strong stage presence and a subtle use of electronics, the trio guides the audience through shifting worlds and moods, making each concert a singular experience.

Their latest album, Sorry Boss, has been widely praised in the international press and received regular airplay on European jazz radio. Outside of the trio, Karlsson is also a co-founder of the renowned jazz group Oddjob and a sought-after musician on the international scene, notably as a member of the Magnus Öström Group.

In 2023, Karlsson was awarded the Jan Johansson Scholarship, with the following citation:

"In pianist Daniel Karlsson, the board of the Jan Johansson Memorial Fund finds an approach to music that is both free and controlled. We are struck by how Karlsson engages with, rather than merely draws from, the modern jazz tradition—bringing it to life with his own creative voice. We hear several parallels to Jan Johansson and wish to highlight how both these significant pianists, across generations, bring a strong overarching concept to each album or project. Ultimately, they share the courage to protect their artistic integrity and carry out their creative vision with clarity and beauty."
– Johannes Cornell, for the Jan Johansson Memorial Fund

In the fall of 2025, the trio will release their eighth full-length album.

This is a picnic event, or as we like to call is: Picnic theater. That means that you may bring your own food and drinks to the event.

It doesn’t matter what you bring – take-away pizza at one table is followed by oysters and caviar at the next. Bring what you feel like, and don't forget to bring glasses and cuttlery!

Please note that you may not bring food if you have tickets for the balcony, only drinks and snacks.
