Rooted in Swedish folk traditions and inspired by both Balkan music and jazz, Malmö-based Malört has crafted a sound entirely their own – something that might best be described as Swedish world music. Polskas from Värmland on trumpet and trombone or a schottis colliding with oriental rhythms. From warm Rhodes tones, melodic bass lines, and dynamic percussion grows a vibrant sonic landscape where the expressive wind instrumentalists are free to roam.
Trumpeter and composer Mathias Gunnarsson initiated the project and is behind much of the band’s repertoire. The group blends original compositions with traditional folk tunes, giving the music both depth and curiosity.
Their wide range of influences and this fresh combination of musicians bring new colors to Sweden’s folk music scene. The members – known from acts such as Östblocket, We Float, Faela, and Helt Off – are all established names in Malmö’s thriving world music community.
In 2025, Malört released their debut album AH!, capturing the band’s playful energy and creative spark in the studio.
