Now past 80, yet he shows no signs of slowing down. The legendary drummer Billy Cobham, born in Panama and raised in Brooklyn, first made his mark in the 1960s — initially with Miles Davis, and later as one of the founding members of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the group that forever changed the way jazz and rock could meet. Few drummers have left such a profound imprint on modern music history. As one of the true pioneers of jazz fusion, Cobham has continually pushed the boundaries between jazz, rock, and funk with explosive technique, flawless precision, and limitless creativity.
His 1973 debut album ”Spectrum” remains one of the most influential works in the genre and set a new standard for fusion drumming. Over the following decades, he continued to explore and reinvent the style with albums such as Crosswinds, A Funky Thide of Sings, and Life and Times.
“Billy Cobham set a new benchmark for fusion drumming, marrying jaw-dropping jazz-honed dexterity with pulverizing rock power.”
– Rolling Stone
